A Testimonial From Dr. Ghizlane Bendriss

Expert Testimonial

I first visited Orient Spirit Development Center in June 2025, as a neuroscientist working in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. What I experienced there left a deep mark on me.
From the very first moment, I felt welcomed by the young people at the center. They received me with sincerity and warmth. In that space, only humanity counts. We sang together. We shared emotional moments. We connected in a very real and simple way.
I was deeply impressed by the multi-approach model designed at the center: the music approach, the art approach, the design and crafting workshops, the aquaculture projects on the rooftop, and many more. So many skills are taught to these children and young adults with special needs. Some have become independent to the point they opened their own tailoring businesses. Some paint, others plant; these are not just entertaining activities, they are real responsibilities and real preparation for life. Through these different approaches, you can see them grow — in confidence, in independence, and in identity.
What is powerful about this multi-approach philosophy is that it leaves space for each child to develop their own specific creativity. It nurtures teamwork, skill-building, and complementarity rather than competition. Each individual finds where they shine, while still belonging to a collective.
They celebrate Eid together. They bake cakes, decorate them with sugar icing, and offer them with pride. There is a true sense of belonging and community.
What touched me deeply is this: while I do research to better understand neurodevelopmental disorders and to propose research approaches for the future, Orient Spirit works in the present, at the other end. They make things happen. They work side by side with the young people every single day. They build independence, dignity, and strength in real time.
Mrs Filisteen has built more than a center — she has built a home for these kids. You can feel that this is her life’s work. Her dedication and vision are present in every detail. The entire team works with genuine commitment and heart. Rula, the music therapist, is exceptional — her sensitivity and connection with the young people are truly remarkable.
I truly believe that the educational model followed by this center is key. The structured yet flexible, multi-approach philosophy they apply could serve as a model for others. I sincerely hope that centers across the Middle East can connect, exchange experiences, and learn from one another to strengthen support for individuals with special needs throughout the region.
This was only a few hours visit, but it is something I will not forget.
